This hymn, also known as “Draw Me Nearer,” was written by the prolific American hymn writer Fanny Crosby.
Her inspiration for the song began as Crosby was visiting Mr. W. H. Doane in his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had been talking together about the nearness of God, as the sun was setting and evening shadows were gathering. Their conversation so impressed the well-known hymn-writer, that before retiring, she had finished the words to this hymn. The music by Mr. Doane complemented the words so well that the hymn has become a church favorite.
