Astral Weeks

Astral Weeks is the seminal second solo album by the Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. It has become well know as Van’s early creative masterpiece of free expression. Van achieved this type of unpolished freedom by giving sparse direction to a group of jazz session musicians, most of which didn’t even know him. They were rounded up by producer Lewis Merenstein. An example of Van’s minimal direction to drummer Connie Kay was simply “play the music however you want to play it.”

Astral Weeks received critical acclaim immediately upon its first release in 1968. Later in 1987, as part of their 20th anniversary, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number seven on "The 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years".

For me, listening to Van Morrison has always been an almost spiritual experience and I'm thrilled to select Astral Weeks for an album cover redesign! Should I ever become exiled to a deserted island with a single choice of music to take, this would be it.
