Composer Gil Evans, who collaborated extensively with Miles Davis on some of his historic albums, hired a young Maria Schneider in 1986 as his copyist and assistant. After working together for several years, Evans’ impressionistic influence on Maria as both big band leader and composer became unmistakable.
In 2007, the beautifully lush recording of Sky Blue was released and produced by Maria Schneider and Ryan Truesdell. It is a true big band sound with Maria’s large 22-piece jazz orchestra. She even enlisted band members to contribute bird calls for “Cerulean Skies,” ultimately winning a 2008 GRAMMY for “Best Instrumental Composition.”
I chose Sky Blue for another album cover redesign, because it is a masterpiece of movement within finely crafted melodies. It is an original work of art, from beginning to end, that I would highly recommend.
